Chautauqua Institution is a not-for-profit, 750-acre community on Chautauqua Lake in southwestern New York state. During a nine-week summer season, Chautauqua offers children’s school programming. The existing school pavilion was open to the elements and too small for current needs.
The project involved removal of existing pavilion and construction of a new, larger pavilion that is open, yet offers adequate shelter from the elements. The design continues the architectural style of the existing school structure. Columns from the existing pavilion were salvaged and reused to create a colonnade between the new pavilion and the existing school building. Also in this space between the pavilion and the school building is a formal courtyard that provides an improved entry and visitor registration experience.
